Over the past few years blogging has opened up SO many doors for me. It’s what helped me start a freelance writing business. It’s where my virtual assistant and blog management clients came from and it’s a big reason why I was able to earn over $63,000 online in 2015 and $86,000 in 2016.
(For the record that’s over twice as much as I’ve ever earned working a “real” job!)
The truth is starting a blog is pretty easy. Earning money from a blog is a little more tricky but it’s doable and has many benefits outside of earning money.
I’ve learned a ton about blogging over the past several years. Today I’m going to show you how you can start a blog with a good hosting company and also various ways you can make money from a blog.
A Word of Advice Before You Begin
Before you start a blog you have to know what you’re going to blog about! It’s very important that you pick a topic that you can write about forever without becoming bored or running out of ideas.
If you aren’t sure what direction you want to take your blog consider coming up with a general blog name that could be taken several different directions. (That’s what I wish I would’ve done!)
How to Start a Professional Blog (The Cheap and Easy)
Here’s how to start a blog with GoDaddy for only $12 per year!
# 1 – Visit GoDaddy (use the link below for a good deal)
Go through this link to get $1/mo WordPress Hosting from GoDaddy! (You need to go through that link to get the special pricing.) Get deals from new hosting promo codes
Click the “economy” option. Click continue at the bottom of the screen.
(Your discount will show up when you checkout.)
# 2 – Choose Your Domain
Finding a good domain name can be tough! I’d recommend you come up with several ideas because most will be taken. I’d also recommend that you try and go with a .com name
You can check your domain’s availability by entering it in the box provided.
When you find an available domain, it should automatically select it for you, hit the continue button.
# 3 – Checkout
Next you’ll be taken to the checkout page where your discount will automatically apply. Click checkout and fill in your payment information.
# 4 – Set Up WordPress
This is the part where most people get tripped up but it’s easy to do, I promise.
When you’re finished checking out you’ll be taken to a Thank You page. Scroll to the bottom of that page and you’re gonna see this:
Click “Web Hosting”
Under “New CPanel” click setup.
Below is what the next screen will look like. If the domain name you want is already selected just hit next. If not, choose your desired domain name from the drop down menu and click next.
The next screen is pretty self-explanatory. Choose your location and hit next.
On the following screen you’ll be prompted to create a username and password. I put my username as the name of the site I was creating. Just choose something you’ll remember. (Or better yet write it down!) After that click next.
Next is the screen below. Click “yes” and enter the username and password you’d like for your WordPress blog. You’re done!
GoDaddy will start setting up your WordPress site and will email you when it’s completed. After completion you’ll be able to log in using the username and password you just set up.
To log in to your blog simply go to thedomainyouchose.com/wp-admin From there you can enter in your username and password.
That’s it. You’re now officially a blogger with a WordPress site! Congrats. Now you can move on to the fun stuff like finding a good theme and of course, writing blog posts.

How to Earn Money From Your Blog
Once you’ve chosen what you want to blog about and have setup your blog and created content you can begin to monetize.
Every blog earns money in a different way. What works for me may not work for you and vice versa. That’s why it’s important to make a plan and experiment.
Here are some of the most popular ways to make money blogging. (But remember the sky is the limit!)
Put Ads on Your Blog
When it comes to running ads on your blog there are three main types: CPC, CPM, and Direct Ads.
The most common ad network in the blogosphere is Google Adsense. (See my top lefthand side bar for an example.) This is called a CPC, or cost per click, ad.
With Google Adsense you get paid every time a reader clicks on one of your ads. The amount you get paid is highly dependent on the particular niche that you’re in. For example, I write a lot about personal finance and since this is such a competitive niche the cost per click (CPC) is higher compared to a blog about knitting sweaters, for example.
Other CPC networks you might be interested in joining are Yahoo/Bing’s ad network, called Media.net
CPM ads are Cost per Thousand. This mean you get paid a set amount of money for every thousand pageviews your blog gets. The amount you get paid per thousand pageviews is once again very dependent upon your niche.
Some popular CPM adnetworks are Sovrn and The Blogger Network.
With CPC and CPM ads the higher traffic you have the more money you’ll make. Don’t expect to make more than a handful of pennies if you have low pageviews. On the other hand there’s nothing wrong with going ahead and putting those ads on your blog from the very beginning so that you’re readers are always used to them.
The last type of ad is direct advertising. This is when a company offers to place an ad on your site for a certain amount of money each month.

Affiliate Sales
Affiliate sales occur when you recommend a product to your reader and they sign up using your special affiliate link. (For example, if you use my GoDaddy Affiliate Link I’ll earn a small commission and you’ll get a discount. It’s a win-win!)
You can become an affiliate for almost everything under the sun. The commissions vary depending on what company you’re promoting. Some of the most common affiliate networks are Amazon Associates, FlexOffers and Commission Junction.
You can normally find out how to sign up as an affiliate for a particular company by visiting their website and scrolling all the way to the bottom and looking for the “affiliate” link.
When you’re promoting affiliate links just be sure to keep it natural and NEVER promote anything that you don’t absolutely love!
Sponsored Posts
Sponsored posts are posts that you write to promote a particular company and are paid for. The amount you get paid for sponsored post can range anywhere from $10-$2,000 depending upon your blog’s traffic and audience.
If you think you’d be a good fit to work with a particular company you can email them with your ideas (I’ve had a ton of success by just asking!) or you can sign up to do sponsored posts at one of these third party places:
Just like with any other blog monetization avenue you should only accept sponsored posts that align closely with your brand and audience of your particular blog. I know how tempting it is to just take the money for anything but that can do more harm than help in the long run.
An example of a sponsored post on this site would be The Tale of Two Credit Scores which I wrote in partnership with Discover – a company whose products I use!
Selling Your Own Product
Another great monetization method is selling your own product.
I’ve witnessed other bloggers have huge success with this but since it’s not something I’ve done myself yet I can’t give you a ton of advice.
Some things you can create to sell are printable worksheets, e-books, and courses.
Use Your Blog to Start a Service Based Business
I have found great success with using my blog as a way to find freelance blogging clients. I used to earn the majority of my income from writing and doing virtual assistant for other bloggers. (My income now comes mainly from this blog. Click the income reports button in the sidebar to see a breakdown of my online income.)
You can see how I was able to launch my freelance writing business here. Making money solely from a blog is a long process so if you need immediate cash consider using your blog to start a service based business.
Blogging is Not a Race
Blogging is not a race. If you’re just starting out don’t compare yourself to the huge bloggers. We all start at ground zero!
You’re not going to get rich overnight from blogging. Instead think of a long term plan and start working on getting traffic and gaining readers. After that opportunities will start to find you.

Ah you must really hate the look of my site because of AdSense ads : ( Just kiding! I totally know what you are talking about. I have made just under $100 month on AdSense recently and I think that’s really good for AdSense. I would love to broker deals to have private banner ads instead, but for now I am okay experiementing with AdSense. I do know some clicks can pay up to $15/20 per click as some keywords are highly sought after by companies. Anyway glad to hear we are both making money and here’s to many years of online income : )
No I actually think your site looks great! I don’t really mind Google Adsense on other sites so much, for some reason I just don’t like it on mine. It really doesn’t benefit me enough to take up the space. It took me more than a year to get to the $100 payout with it.
I am hoping that if I can get my other sites going that Adsense will be a part of the monetization method. I think the ads will have higher pay rates.

I feel like income and traffic reports on blogs are pretty rare. A lot of people want to keep that stuff secret for good reason, but the blogs that do talk about it have really inspired me. I’ve almost hit that $100 payment threshold in Google Adsense!!
It took me forever to hit the Adsense payment threshold. I like posting my goals online because it actually motivates me to do better. Although it makes me nervous to post my traffic for the fact that it’s probably pretty low compared to others. I am trying not to compare myself to other bloggers though. Sometimes easier said than done!

I’d love to get into more affiliate marketing, but like you said only for products I really feel comfortable promoting. The reality is that some of the major tools I use either don’t have affiliate programs or only have them for people with much more traffic than I currently get. All the more motivation to keep on building that traffic.
I am the same way. I have found 2 programs/products that I really like that I was approved for the affiliate program but I don’t like pushing things down peoples throats. I need to work on a more nonchalant way to promote affiliates. Or maybe affiliate marketing just isn’t for me. Time will tell!

Thanks for sharing! I would love to monetize my blog but I’m have a long ways to go. Right now, I’m trying to focus on content. Since I freelance write on the side, my blog is a great online “portfolio”.
I’m still building traffic and looking for that product that everyone needs. So far, I haven’t found it and usually feel guilty trying to sell anything. I do think you can make lots of money if you can get people to sign up for a credit card through your site. I am a strong proponent of travel rewards, so I don’t feel bad telling which cards I use, but I still feel a bit wrong because there are readers who are trying to pay off debt, and dangling a credit card offer is not what they need. I’m not sure where making money and feeling guilty equal out and feel OK.
I agree with the credit card affiliate marketing. Investing has a pretty high payout from what I’ve seen as well. My problem is that I don’t usually use credit cards and that I am investing idiot so I can’t comfortably promote anything like that. But, I think if you’re big on the credit card rewards then promoting credit card offers is a great idea.

Adsense is a tricky beast. You have to put the ads in the right place and understand which ad formats work the best. My site is doing the best it ever has these past few months and hopefully that can continue!
Adsense IS a tricky beast! When I first started blogging I thought it would be my ticket to earning money – wrong! I am going to have to browse your site and pay attention to your placings.

Seems like the bloggers I read are really split on whether to do Adsense or not. How much traffic would you say you need in order for that to begin to pay off? My guess is I don’t have enough yet.

Yes exactly! A portion of the money came from the blog but I also had a pretty good month as far as freelancing is concerned last month. I’ve yet to line up as many freelance jobs for this month.
I get intimidated when I think about monetizing my blog because I’ve only made a few bucks from adsense (not nearly a decent amount for all the work I put into it!). Thankfully I do it mostly for fun. Still, one day I hope to make a good side income from my blog.

I am losing a lot of traffic because I suck at the social networking part, but in my case the income I manage to generate from blogging is enough for me and my family to live a decent life. I plan on trying to improve the affiliate sales and generate passive income as soon as possible, but I also suck at this too and never managed to have the success other affiliate bloggers had. Well, hopefully my time will come :))
Great goals, Alexa! I want to work harder on increasing readership. I’ve never really thought about that until recently, but although we’ve got great numbers right now, they’ve been stagnant, and I’d like to challenge myself to get them to grow.
I would not recommend GoDaddy for anything. had horrible experiences, so did my clients. For registrations I used namecheap and the hosting comes from HostGator. once you use a cpanel host you will NEVER want to deal with the sluggish and horribly planned hosting interface in GD. I mean it’s ludicrous to have to wait for 20 minutes to set a database (or do anything on it), when a cpanel hosting account lets me do it INSTANTLY.

Hey Kariston (love your name!) I think starting a blog under a general domain name is a great way to get your feet wet. I don’t think you have to pick just one niche and can instead try to tie a few different topics together. I would pick out the few topics you wanted to write about, find a domain name that suited all of them (something broad) and then start writing on each of them. You’ll quickly figure out what you enjoy writing about and what flops.

Yes, most them will require you establish yourself a bit before applying. However, you may be able to get into Amazon or FlexOffers right now.

I was doing some research on how to profit from ads online when I came across your blog. This article inspired me on starting a blog of my own (I could really use the extra income you know?) and there are a few questions I’d like to ask you. How much time per day do you spend on this blog? Also, how do you recieve your payments? Do you sign up your bank data on AdSense? Can I do this even though I do not have an account on a bank in the US? I am from Brazil.

Hey Ricardo, I receive payments in many different ways – Paypal, direct deposit to a bank account, and check by mail. I’m not sure about guidelines for countries other than the U.S.
I spend 10-20 hours per week on this blog but spent much more time when I was just getting established. I hope that helps!

That is definitely far from what I do so I’m not positive on how I would monetize it. Maybe selling MP3’s of the audio. Start a podcast and then having sponsors? Something along those lines could possibly work.

My biggest pointer is to be in it for a long run (if you do end up enjoying it.) There are initially a lot of learning curves and making money takes time – it took me around one year. I’d write 10 posts and then try and start promoting. You’ll quickly learn whether you like blogging or not. I hope that helps 🙂

I really have a passion that has driven me for 37 years. I also had the problem and I am unsure how exactly I was blessed with an answer, treatment methods and terminology that those who also had the problem relate to. I have been a psychotherapist for 37 years. I am upfront, intense, and real. I have relationship addiction which like other addictions is progressive over time. I wrote stages of this addiction by looking at my own behavior. I also went to college 13 years and have several advanced degrees and certifications. What is sad is that this disease is still in the closest and I do not know any therapist who has a treatment plan that actually breaks the patterns. I have an easy self-evaluation test to define if you are suffering from this addiction. If you answer yes to 3 or more questions then you are suffering from an addiction that originates somewhere in your childhood when you felt abandoned or abused. This event unconsciously shapes your choices in the type of people you pick. I call it broken picker syndrome. Most patients who see me for the first time feel hopeful that finally, someone gave them an answer. It has severe consequences like stalking, domestic violence, neglect of children, and suicide. I only work with serious clients because when you get your happiness your whole life from others it is very difficult to hold still and learn how to find happiness inside yourself. My life goal is to open and train the first relationship treatment program that I know of. Group dynamics are critical and I am known for clients never leaving my groups. That is because I keep them always wondering what will happen in the group tonight and who will go back to their childhood through regression or who will do anger work with a plastic bat at the man who molested you when you were four. I may not see that come to pass but I would love to have a website that people could come to and ask questions about relationships of any type.
It’s always a strong competition between WordPress and Blogger. If you want to earn money without investing a single penny then Blogger is the obvious option (because of integration with Google Adsense).
