Starting an online business is a hot topic these days! Do you know the one thing you need to do to get started?
Share an in demand skill.
An in demand skill does not have to mean the latest and the greatest cutting edge tech. Really, it means finding the skills that you have and like to use and marketing them to those who don’t have the skills or time.
It can be very hard to see the skills in ourselves. If you are a creative or crafty person you probably have friends that are also creative and crafty. Then you start to think that everyone is crafty. Wrong. If you are really in to tech you think everyone else is too. No they are not.
Your potential clients are all over the world. Just because your friends wouldn’t hire a job out doesn’t mean that no one else will.
Almost any business skill can be transferred to an online business.
Determine Your Skills
Write a list of skills that you have used in previous jobs. Include both simple and complex things.
- Can you do basic data entry ?
- How about accounting ?
- Are you good with people ?
- Can you make sales calls or set appointments ?
- Can you organize meetings or travel plans ?
- Can you create photos or logos ?
Don’t be discouraged … online business isn’t for everyone. Child care, yard work, house cleaning, cooking, garage organizing, are all great ways to make money too!
Create a Simple Website
You can create a simple one page website with a place like 1&1 to highlight your services and send potential customers to. Do not be tempted to add a bunch of blinking icons! This is not a Facebook Page that you are sending to your friends. You are creating a business page.
List your complete contact information and the skills / services you are offering. Remember to include the benefits to your potential clients. How will hiring you help them out ? Can you provide more expertise ? Can you save them time or money ? Can you do the work quickly?
Provide testimonials or references from previous clients or employers. Depending on the type of work that you are doing you might be able to include photos.
This website can be simple. Think of it as a step between you and your potential clients. Potential clients may know nothing about you before they read your page or they may want a little more information before they call or email you.
Promote Your Services
Now that you have a web page, promote yourself! List your services on : Facebook,Linkedin, and CraigsList. Be sure to include a link to your new web page so that readers can easily get more information about you. Leave comments on blogs that are related to your new business.
This might sound like an oversimplified way to start an online business but I promise, it doesn’t have to be as complicated as you think. Create your home on the web, target clients, and pitch your services.
You’ll learn everything else as you go. This really is the most simple way to start an online business and it works!
