HAWO American Academy
Founded in 2011, HAWO has burst onto the scene as one of the leaders in helping K-12 students from China learn English as a second language. HAWO lists some key elements that they help the children develop with their classes problem solving, analytical skills, and critical thinking.
Some requirements for the position are you must be a native English speaker with a neutral accent, experience teaching or tutoring, and have a BA degree or currently enrolled in a major university. Teaching licenses or certificates are also preferred.
You must be committed to teaching group classes for at least 10 hours a week for 10 weeks. You choose your own schedule and can make up to $22 an hour.

51 Talk
51 Talk is another platform that hires teachers to educate children that live in China, but they also work with children from the Philippines as well. There are over 15,000 teachers employed by 51 Talk and over 1 million students registered on the platform.
The lesson plans will be company-provided so you don’t have to worry about coming up with your own material. Unlike HAWO, 51 Talk lessons are one on one with students. Each teaching session runs about 25 minutes. You must be fluent in English of course to apply.
Earnings are based on the amount of successful bookings a teacher has. The better the educator performs the more bookings they will have. Top earners in the company make as much as $1,500 per month.
Education First
Apply to be a teacher for Education First (EF) and be ready to teach your first class in as soon as two weeks. After you submit your application you’ll get the chance to get a virtual tour of the EF classroom from someone in the recruitment department.
You must live in the United States or the United Kingdom to work with EF. By the time you begin your teaching term, you must submit a 40-hour Teaching English as a Second Language certificate.
WIFI is not compatible with the EF system so access to a wired Ethernet connection will be required in addition to a headset and a personal computer.
Teachers can receive a $30 bonus after completing their first lesson. Even though hours cannot be guaranteed, parents typically book their child with the same teacher sometimes months in advance. If you do have any technical issues, the tech department is there for you 24/7.
Teachers invoice on the 5th day preceding their teaching month and payments are processed for direct deposit by the 26th.
Teaching times are usually after school gets out according to China’s time zone, which is weekday mornings here in the US so 4:00 am EST to 8:30 am EST). EF offers a $1.50usd per hour/ along with a $.75usd per class supplemental fee for classes taught during some peak times of 5:00 am and 7:30 am during the week.
GoGoKid
GoGoKid applicants should have a bachelors degree at minimum. You have to have some sort of college degree to even be considered for employment. As an independent contractor with GoGoKid, your contract will be for six months. After that you are up for a review of how your performance has been going prior to being renewed.
Classes with Go Go Kid are one on one. There is some required communication between you and the student’s parents. Within 12 hours of the class ends you need to let the parents know what you did in class, what the student did well, what they need to practice more and instructions on how to practice if it’s needed.
Your hourly wage is between $14-$25 per hour. You will be paid no later than the 15th of each month. PayPal is the best method to be paid.
VIPKid
VIP Kid helps students in China between the ages of 4-12 learn English as a second language. You can live anywhere and become a teacher with VIP Kid all you would need is a stable internet connection. VIP Kid also has a six-month contract that can be renewed after the review period.
The curriculum is provided for you 6-12 hours in advance in the teachers portal. You can use this time to find some relevant props to make the teaching experience the best for the students.
Teachers earn between $14-$22 an hour with VIP Kid. Direct deposits are made between the 10th-15th of every month. Teachers can qualify for raises after they are reevaluated during the renewal period.
You do have the option to take some time off during your contract VIP Kid. Simply asks for a two-week notice if that is something that you want to do.
