How to Become a Tutor with Studypool

If you’re looking for a tutoring site that falls into the unconventional category, this might be it. Here's how to become a tutor with Studypool.Tutoring has always been a great side hustle and probably always will be. As long as there are education systems around there will always be a need for tutors.

However, over the past few years the tutoring landscape has changed quite drastically. While there are still traditional in-person tutors (which work great for some people) there are now a ton of online opportunities. And even these online opportunities can be completely different from one another.

Some online tutoring platforms have tutors scheduling Skype or phone sessions with students on strict schedules and pay by the hour. Other sites allow tutors to simply pop in and answer questions when they get a chance and earn based on how much effort they want to put in.

If you’re looking for a tutoring site that falls into the unconventional category, Studypool might be it. This company offers a unique way for tutors to earn on their own schedule.

Here’s how to become a tutor with Studypool.

How Studypool Tutoring Works

The tutoring that goes on at Studypool is a bit different than what traditional tutoring looks like. The main premise of Studypool is students asking questions and tutors answering.

Here’s how it works:

  • A student submits a question they need help with and places a budget with the question.
  • As the tutor you browse the questions and bid on them with a price and a deadline.
  • If you’re chosen by the student you’ll be required to live up to your promise and answer by the deadline.
  • Once you make good on your promise and the student is satisfied, payment will be released to you.
  • Students can rate you which can positively (or negatively) affect your ability to get future, higher paying work.

Over 10,000 questions are posted daily. This means as a tutor there’s a lot of opportunity. Here’s a look at some of the recent questions:

In addition to answering questions you can also upload your old academic papers such as notes and study guides to the Studypool Notebank. Students can then buy your uploads through the Notebank, giving you a chance for a more passive type of income.

Tutor Requirements

To become a tutor with Studypool you’ll need to possess a degree in higher education or be a college or university student.

You can apply to be a tutor here.

How Much Money Can You Make?

The amount of money you can earn is going to be dependent on many factors.

First, the types of questions you’re answering and the bid you’re making will be a big factor in your income. Secondly, there are no set hours with Studypool and you’re free to answer as many or as little questions as you’d like.

In 2015 the top five earners earned between $53,000 and $171,000. But again those were the TOP earners and you shouldn’t expect to earn nearly as much when getting started. It could take a while for you to build your reputation and tutoring income.

I’d expect to earn in the range of extra spending money up to what a part-time job could offer if you put in more time on the site.

Other important info: Studypool takes a 20-30% commission of what you earn. Payments are made via Paypal.

You will be considered an independent contractor when tutoring with Studypool so you will be responsible for paying your own taxes on the money you earn.

This is For You If………..

If you’re not sure if Studypool is for you I’d suggest you go ahead and try it out. You’ll quickly see if this type of tutoring suits your personality and lifestyle.

    Hi Alexa,

Thanks for sharing the details about working for Studypool as a tutor. Seems like a great gig for anyone who wants to work independently and loves working with kids. 🙂

    I was a teacher’s assistant and I loved it!

Passing this along! Have a great day and weekend.

Wow, those top earners are doing pretty well for themselves, though I’m sure they’re spending a ton of time doing it. It’s definitely worth taking a shot and testing it out. Even a a hundred bucks a month would be welcome if it didn’t take too much time and effort.

Yeah, definitely. It could especially be a good fit for college students needing to earn just a little extra.

This sounds great, but what about sahms who don’t have a degree? I’ve literally only had a few odds and ends jobs while in college (which I decided wasn’t for me) and otherwise I was busy with my education and didn’t have a job. Where are the entry level jobs like this? I don’t have time for a conventional job because my baby girl is my priority, but making a little on the side wouldn’t hurt. I need a very flexible thing like this tutoring site.
