The struggles of parenthood as a single parent are quite often overlooked and underplayed in our culture. Perusing a successful business career can in itself present hurdles, but throw raising a child into the mix and the task seems almost impossible. Yet, there are countless single moms who have worked hard at their craft and become a force to be reckoned with.
Whether you are looking to make some money on the side or reach for the sky, both options are more open than you might think.
Here’s just a few of the many single (or at least started out) mom entrepreneurs out there currently making waves in the business world.
Lisa Stone
Lisa is the founder, creator and CEO of BlogHer – one of the world’s leading guides to woman’s issues trending around the world and which keeps an audience of millions entertained every month. Stone’s business also hosts blogging and social media conventions for women, which attracts scores of female writers from across US every year.
The mass consumption of the internet since the nineties has created endless opportunities for people like Lisa, who have an idea and more importantly, drive. In fact, most started with a basic hosting package for their burgeoning website and catapulted their dreams into the big time. Lisa Stone and BlogHer are the embodiment of this ideal.
Lauren Thom
Lauren Thom is a single mother of three and also the founder and CEO of New Orleans based clothing brand Fleurty Girl. In 2009, Thom received a $2,000 tax return and used the money to begin her business venture. When the Saints football team won the Super Bowl in 2010, Thom seized upon a fantastic business opportunity and made a killing on Saints inspired T-shirts that she designed and sold in her online store.
Today she owns several stores and employs close to 30 people.
Melissa Kieling
Being a mother was anything but a drawback for making it in business for Melissa Kieling. In fact, it helped her to get started. Kieling had a reoccurring problem – how could she keep her children’s school lunch cool and safe throughout the morning? She patented the PackIt lunch bag with the capacity to keep the lunch cool for hours by using a freezable gel. Today her business is worth $14 million.
These strong, business minded women are just a few from the many. There are countless self-made professional women out there, who are starting out with little more than an idea and a ton of motivation. Will you join them?
