The temperature is dropping, the leaves are falling, and my favorite season is here. Fall is the time of pumpkins, sweatshirts, good food, and frugal fun. It’s also the time of two fun and festive holidays, Halloween and Thanksgiving.
And since Halloween is quickly approaching it’s time to break out the candy, decorations, and costumes. Here are three frugal Halloween tips that I use and that you can too.
Save Big on Pumpkins, Gourds, and Other Seasonal Items
I was shocked to discover the large pumpkins I had purchased at the local Amish market for $3 were a whopping $7.50 at Sam’s Club. Walmart’s and Kmart’s prices weren’t too much lower either.
Shop locally owned businesses and you can score some big savings on your pumpkin needs. Check local farmers markets, craft stores, and Amish markets if you have any in your area.
Opt for Frugal Fall Fun
For the month of October I have two fun filled frugal weekends planned for the girls. Both are low cost and are packed with learning.
It’s a beautiful time to be outdoors. Take walks, read books, carve pumpkins, make leaf piles, and bake some goodies. Let your kids help you whip up some spooky cookies, graveyard brownies, or pumpkin pillows.
Score Some Cheap Costumes
Start shopping early enough and you’ll be able to score some sweet savings on Halloween costumes. Even better, you can browse the left over costumes at the end of the season for rock bottom pricing on next year’s costumes.
Or, you could test your creativity skills and fabricate your own costume. My girls have enough fairy wings, princess dresses, and high heel shoes to dress a small army. Perfect Halloween costume pieces!

Being out in the country, we enjoy some candy and a movie on Halloween. Also, we’re trying a new Apple Crisp recipe this year, and of course some apple pie. 🙂
our kids are still young so they love going on fall walks and talk about the different colors and pick up leaves, carve pumpkins, maybe even drink hot chocolate this year!
I’m definitely going to be doing some baking this fall. I don’t have any kids but I love baking holloween treats with my little cousins.
While Halloween isn’t my fave holiday, I do love fall. I typically decorate with items from outside (leaves, acorns, twigs, mums, apples, etc.) to save on decorations.
All holidays can be spent nicely with the family and still not make such a huge dent in the finances. We tried splurging on some of our holidays in the past and to be honest, other than the frustration of really squandering our budget, we didn’t feel too much. But then we had some that didn’t cost too much, but we’ll always remember for the great time we had with our families.
Holidays need not be a cause for worry on our finances. There are countless ways to save and prepare for any extra expenses. Potluck works for when your inviting guests over. It’s a great way to sample different dishes with less stress and less expenses.
My favorite Halloween was when I was 13 and we had a big party with bobbing for apples, hayrides and all. We were all dressed up as farmers. Lots of fun.
