Kailyn came home from school Monday with pink eye. I took her to the doctor who advised her to stay home from school for the next two days.
She was so bummed about missing school that we decided to have our own school at home. We dug up three of our favorite fall books and found free activities to go with them.
The girls loved all of these activities sooo much that I just had to share.
Creepy Carrots
Kailyn picked up Creepy Carrots from a book fair a couple weeks ago and it has instantly become one of the girls’ favorite books. The story and illustrations are great and the book has a neat way of easing a child’s irrational fears.
To go along with the book each of the girls made (several) of their own “creepy carrots” using the printable found here.
The girls also had some creepy carrots to eat with their lunch.
There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly
While not technically a Halloween book there’s something about this classic that reminds me of the fall. Maybe it’s the clothes the old lady wears?
This was one of my favorite books as a kid and my girls love it too. (Although the wording has changed a little bit. Does anyone else remember when this book used to end with “There was an old lady who swallowed a horse. What happened? She died of course!” Maybe that’s considered “inappropriate” now.)
Regardless this is still a great book and the activity to go along with it was the girls’ favorite.
What you’ll need: an old cereal box and these printables. Tape the old lady to the cereal box cut a hole out for the mouth. As you read the story have your kids put the bugs/animals in.
My girls loved this so much that Kailyn quickly memorized every word in the book so that she could do this herself. I’m sure this is an activity that we’ll be doing over and over. This is also perfect for kids who can’t pay attention during story time – it make reading aloud a very hands on experience.
Twas the Night Before Halloween
I ordered The Night Before Halloween from Amazon around this time last year and we’ve been enjoying it ever since. Weirldy enough this book has ended up in our reading rotation even in the summer months.
For this activity we went old school and made some Halloween masks out of paper (well, foam) plates. Although paper plates would’ve worked much better.
We cut eyes out and taped popsicle sticks to the plates. I didn’t have anything to decorate them with other than crayon so I was extremely surprised at how much the girls loved these.
Those are our favorite fall children’s books and activities (at the moment!)
What are yours? Any recommendations?

I love the activities you came up with to go with each story. That’s awesome! I particularly liked the “old lady” cereal box 🙂 Priceless! I had my favorite book memorized when I was a kid too…

Glad you liked it. Since we’ve done these they’ve begged to do a craft with every book we’ve read. I had to make a trip to the Dollar Tree to stock up on craft supplies 🙂
