If I handed you a program that would teach you step-by-step how to build your own freelance business that many before you had successfully completed would you believe that you, too, could be successful?
How about if I gave you a simple meal plan that would guarantee you to lose ten pounds and feel super healthy, but you had to stick with it for sixty days – would you do it or would you automatically think “yeah, this works for others but not for me?”
Here lately I’ve noticed in an immense amount of women who believe that they are the exception. That other people are meant to be successful but just not them…
You Are Not the Exception
There are exceptions. For instance, those making $50,000+ per month. Those are the exceptions – very few people will ever reach that amount of income. (Less than 1% of Americans, in fact.)
You wanting to fulfill a dream of creating your own business, successfully finding clients or earning a little money on the side are not an exception! And in most cases YOU are the only person standing in your own way.
Reasons You Think You’re the Exception
You’re Afraid of Failure – One of the biggest reasons many women don’t try is because they are afraid to fail. The good and bad news is that EVERYONE fails.
I sent about 100 pitches before I got my first freelance writing job and I spent a year blogging before seeing any type of pay-off. Even though I hated rejection I quickly had to learn to accept the failure and move on.
Don’t be afraid of failure. There isn’t a single person who’s ever accomplished anything worthwhile without falling on their butts at least a few times.
As Thomas Edison said, “I didn’t fail, I just found 100 ways to do it wrong.”
You Lack Self-Confidence – For some reason you’ve put it in your head that other people must have something that you don’t. I get it. There are definitely times that I’ve filled my head with self-doubt too.
A lack of self-confidence is a major hurdle keeping you from success. If this sounds like you, you can read more about changing your mindset and building confidence here.
You Don’t Want to Do the Work – The thing about finding success is that it usually takes a whole ton of work. You may look at someone, wishing that you could have their success, but aren’t taking into account the thousands of hours they’ve put in to get to where they are.
Reaching worthwhile goals is never easy. It takes a lot of work and perseverance.
Nobody is going to hand you anything. If you want something you have to be the one to make it happen.
So, How Do You Do It?
So, how do you stop feeling like you’re the exception and finally gain momentum?
- Accept the fact that everyone (including you) is worthy of their own definition of success just as long as they’re able and willing to work for it.
- Hone in on YOUR unique skillset.
- Stop letting rejection and fear of failure rule you. The more you practice this the easier it becomes.
- Be realistic with timelines. You have to work for what you want and put the time in.
It’s Not Just About Money
I’ve used earning more money in this post because it’s an issue I see over and over, week after week. But maybe earning more isn’t on your priority list right now. (Which is totally cool.)
This applies to everything. You have one life to live. Do not spend it thinking that others are more worthy of accomplishing a goal than you are. You are just as important as every other person walking this planet.
If you want something then start taking the steps to make it happen. It doesn’t mean it will be easy and doesn’t mean it will be quick – but so what? Nothing that was quick and easy to get was ever worth it anyway…
