So I didn’t make my spending and goals post last week because it was the 4th of July.
And last week was a busy week.
So now here’s edition number two of my long rambling post 😉 A sneak peek into our lives.
Horrible Colds in July
Ava came down with a really bad cold. It started on Thursday and at first I didn’t think anything of it. But by Saturday she wouldn’t talk or eat. That’s so unlike her. I mean the girl can’t go two hours without whining about something. And eating? I’ve never seen a kid with such a huge appetite. She eats more than I do. For real.
By Sunday she was acting like her normal self again but then I caught the cold. My throat burned like fire for about three days. I’m finally glad to report that I think we have all got through the worst of it.
(And for some reason Kailyn never gets sick, like ever. Even when every other kid at the babysitter has a cough and runny nose. She doesn’t. She must have an awesome immune system. So that’s good.)
The Yard Sale – Made $350
We had a yard sale at my Dad’s store last Thursday – Saturday.
My aunt and I brought all of our junk and you would not believe the turnaround. It may sound a little weird to have a yard sale in front of a store but for this town it’s not.
This store is about 40 minutes from where I live and is in a backward hillbilly town that borders Kentucky. People went crazy over the yard sale and almost every single thing sold. Even the really, really junky stuff.
(What was weird was that my clothes that still had the freaking tags on them didn’t sell. I had a pair of H&M dress pants with tags for $3 that didn’t sell yet holey t-shirts flew off the rack. Weird stuff.)
In total I made about $350. However, I spent $100 of that in weekend spending. Most of that went to the rip off carnival below.
The rest will go into the investment property savings I just haven’t made it to the bank to deposit it yet.
The Rip Off Carnival – Spent $58 in 30 Minutes
We have a yearly Fourth of July carnival in our town called Festival of the Bells.
I try to avoid this but unfortunately the kids at the babysitter had been talking about it and Kailyn had her heart set on going.
We had a ton of stuff to do on Saturday including going to a birthday party for one of my brother’s step kids and making the 40 minute drive to my Dad’s store to pack up all of our yard sale stuff.
I told Kailyn we weren’t going to the festival. She didn’t complain, she didn’t argue, actually she didn’t say a word but tears started to well up in her eyes. She had her heart set on going and seeing the disappointment on her face was starting to break my heart.
So I though what the heck, we’ll go for a little bit.
What a mistake.
We stayed for thirty minutes and spent $58. It really sucked. The people running the rides were super rude. There was actually even one woman I wanted to punch in the face for yelling at the girls for not putting their shoes in the right bucket.
After a half an hour Ava was ready to go. And so was I.
Here’s what we spent.
- 20 Ride Tickets – $22 (the girls each got to do 4 rides took about ten minutes to use those up.)
- 2 Games Each – $10
- Food – $18 (two pieces of stale pizza, two corndogs, two small Pepsis)
- 2 Small Cotton Candy – $8
- Total =
pricelessRipped Off
Weekly Spending – Spent $182.28
- Festival – $58
- Birthday Gift – $10
- Kroger – $114.28
(Kroger was having an awesome sale I had to stock up on some stuff. We should be good on groceries for at least two weeks now – if not longer. Plus we bought hot dogs, hamburgers, and stuff for smores to take to my dads.)
Weekly Goals
- Write a guest post for another blog
- Spend less than $50 for the week (Don’t have my kids this weekend. I think I can do it 😉 )
- Clean and organize the whole house. From top to bottom. (Look for more junk to get rid of. I’m liking the minimalist feel right now.)
- Clean my car. It’s kinda gross.
How about you? Did you have a crazy week? Blow your budget? Get ripped of my somebody?

Fair’s are expensive and a waste of money but kids love them. Just the way it is. 🙂 Glad you all are feeling better. i hate being sick in the summer! My goal this week is to get a job that I’ve applied at for work at home. It’s phone work but it pays pretty well for work at home. This will be a big step for me for quite a few reasons though if i can get it!! I would like to do some blogging and writing on the side as well if i get this job. fingers crossed!! 🙂 If it’s meant to be it will happen though. 🙂

Glad you applied. Sometimes the hardest part of getting a new job is having the courage to actually apply. My fingers are crossed for you.
I would encourage you to get started on the writing and blogging. Once you do some initial legwork and get your name out there it’s not too hard to find those writing jobs. They’re out there everywhere.
My main problem with it though is dealing with burnout. That’s why I’m loving my new writing/virtual assistant mix. Writing all the time is too much for my brain to handle 😉

Oh, no! Summer colds are the worst! Feeling gross when it’s hot out is so miserable. I’m glad you guys have turned the corner, though!
I got scammed at a carnival once. I played one game, and the guy kept screaming at me that I owed him money. Ended up spending $30. And got some normal sized stuffed animal. I wouldn’t have paid, but he was kind of freaking me out. In that moment, $30 was worth my safety.
That’s too weird about the clothes….maybe holey is in? :p

I always avoid the carnival games that men are running. And the carnival games with darts I avoid. It seems like the men running those games are so freaking pushy. I just keep my head down and walk right past them.
The problem I had was some girl running a bouncy house and was yelling at my girls for handing me their shoes instead of putting them in the bin. My blood started to boil. Luckily it didn’t phase the girls.

I think those types of fairs / carnivals are generally quite expensive and somewhat seedy. Hard to turn down your kid who’s been looking forward to it though. Maybe next time you can be ready with another cheaper alternative will appeal to her.
