I have been a long time reader of Smart Passive Income, always intrigued by Pat’s projects and the massive amount of money that he brings in every month. So naturally, after reading Pat’s how to’s on building a niche site, I was dying to try it for myself.
I had been wanting to put together a site that produced income from Google Adsense for awhile, I just couldn’t pinpoint a good subject matter. Not long after my topic search began a friend of mine who was having some personal issues asked me to googe a solution to her problem.
I couldn’t find exactly what she was looking for. I found a little bit of info on one site and a little on another, but nothing was in the same place. I searched a little further and found a forum where people were discussing this particular issue. It appeared to me that there were a lot of people seeking information on this topic.
My lightbulb moment came – this was going to be my topic. I immediately went to GoDaddy to research domain names and the one I wanted was actually available. I set up the website and wrote 10 articles for it. These articles were all basic information on this topic and supported my domain name and the keyword I was going for.
I then concentrated on my keyword. I wrote one article specifically on this keyword, which was also the domain name and name of the website. I used Pat’s backlinking suggestions and one week later I was on the first page of Google for my keyword. After I ranked in Google I put up some ads (not too spammy but definitely in places I thought people would click.)
I started this website in May and I am now up to almost $35 in Adsense earnings. Nothing amazing but anybody who has built a website knows that Adsense definitely takes some time to accumulate.
My topic is very micro. I don’t have much competition at all but it’s also not a highly searched term. I am averaging about one adsense click per 20 visits.
Here’s what I think could happen with this site:
- The topic could appear on the news (very likely) at some point and that would drive people to further research and net me some profit.
- I could try to build up traffic and sell it to a larger company. (It’s a very generic domain name)
- I could just break even every year after factoring the cost of hosting and the small income the site produces.
I figure if the worst case is me breaking even then I might as well just keep the site up for a couple of years and see where it goes.
Have you ever tried making a micro niche website? Any suggestions?

My very first site was pretty micro niche. I had no idea what I was doing. After a while, it just wasn’t worth the effort anymore, so I let it fold. However, if it is fun for you, keep at it…and good luck!!! I hope it works out for you!

I don’t have a micro site. I have a bad/awesome habit of dreaming really big. This year I took my first step in making it happen. Great job on having a break-even site. I’d wait it out and see what happens 🙂 Also props for being descriptive yet discreet at the same time 🙂
